Seven small car costs that quietly add up
Parking, cleaning, the odd top-up — the little stuff that never makes the budget, until it does.
The big car costs get all the attention — finance, insurance, fuel. But there's a second tier of small, forgettable costs that never make it into anyone's budget, and added up over a year they can quietly rival a month's finance payment.
None of them is big enough to notice on its own. That's exactly why they add up: they never arrive as one bill you can flinch at. Here are the seven that catch people out.
1. Parking
Not the big station car park you remember paying for — the drip. A couple of quid here, an hour there, plus the little "convenience fee" the parking app adds on top. A few times a week and you're at £30–£40 a month without ever deciding to spend it.
2. Cleaning and valeting
A £7 hand wash once a fortnight is £180 a year. A full valet before you sell adds another £60–£100. Worth it, often — but it's real money that never gets counted.
3. Clean-air and congestion charges
If you drive into the wrong city on the wrong day, this one stings. London's ULEZ is £12.50 a day for a non-compliant car, the Congestion Charge is now £18 a day, and clean-air zones in cities like Birmingham and Bristol run to around £9. Occasional, but a handful of trips a year adds up fast.
4. Tolls and crossings
The Dartford Crossing is £3.50 a car (a bit less if you prepay), the M6 Toll a few pounds more. Commute across one daily and it's a proper monthly line of its own.
5. Consumables and odds and ends
Screen wash, de-icer, a new set of wiper blades, a blown bulb, a phone mount, an air freshener. Five pounds here, fifteen there — trivial in the moment, a steady trickle across the year.
6. Tyres
The big one hiding in the small list. A decent tyre is £70–£120 fitted, and you'll replace them every few years. Spread out, that's easily £100–£150 a year you never see coming until three of them need doing at once.
7. The occasional fine
Nobody budgets for a parking ticket, but a single penalty charge is £60–£70 (often halved if you pay quickly). One a year isn't unusual, and it lands entirely outside every plan you made.
Individually, none of these is worth worrying about. Together, they're the Misc bucket — the small stuff that never makes the budget, until it does. For a lot of drivers it's a few hundred quid a year of spending they'd swear they never did.
